The lab is now involved in a project on the conservation of Japanese Giant Salamanders (Andrias japonicus) in Daisen, Japan, a project led by Sustainable Daisen.
The species is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Species, principally due to habitat loss, and hybridisation with the Chinese Giant Salamander (Andrias daviadanus species complex). The main goal of the project is to understand the impact of water quality on the population, determine the presence of invasive individuals, and restore the connectivity of the habitat for adult individuals to be able to reach the breeding habitat. The lab is sometimes posting updates here.
All the projects are conducted through non-invasive protocols that do not require touching or handling the species.
